4 Ways to Stay Encouraged as You Lose Weight
One of the most difficult things about losing weight, is staying encouraged. A couple weeks of little to no change on the scale can easily persuade us to give up. Without any encouraging proof that progress is being made we feel as though all of our efforts have been for nothing. Because being able to see progress is so pivotal to your success, we have come up with a few strategies that will make it easier for you.
Strategies to See Progress
Marbles in a jar: This is a very popular visual representation of pounds lost and pounds that you need to lose. What you do is figure out how many pounds you need to lose. For example if I way 200lbs and I want to weigh 150lbs I need to lose 50lbs. So you take 50 marbles and put them in a dish marked “Pounds to Lose”. Every time you lose a pound you move one marble into the another dish marked “Pounds Lost”. This is a great way to see how far you have come and how much further you have to go.
Post an old photo: Post a photo on your mirror of how your body looked before you began on your weight loss journey. Many times we get on the scale and it reads the same number as it did a couple days ago, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t making progress. As fat is burned and muscle grows your weight may not decrease. However, muscle looks much different on the body than fat. Keeping a photo on your mirror will give you a boost of confidence that your body is improving even if your weight hasn’t decreased.
Make a chart of numbers: Create a chart that starts with your current weight and ends with what you want to weigh. For example 200, 199, 198, 197, 196… and so on until you get to the what you want to weigh. Every time you weigh yourself and your down a pound, or more, you cross off the weights that you’ve passed. For example 200, 199, 198, 197, 196. This is a great reminder of where you used to be and how far you’ve come.
Good days chart: This is a great chart for encouraging you to stay on track. It’s easy to think to yourself “Oh I’ll just cheat today and get back on track tomorrow”. As you make a habit of doing this and lose track of how often you’re actually “cheating” weight loss comes to a halt and we wind up back where we started. A great way to keep yourself on track is creating the representation that you will see and be aware of. Buy a calendar and two colors of stickers. Good days will be one color and bad days will be another. As soon as you mess up and eat unhealthy foods, but a bad day sticker on the calendar for that day. If you make it the whole day without getting off track, put a good day sticker on the calendar before you go to sleep.
