Ten Strategies for Avoiding Hunger While Losing Weight
Here are 10 points to help you lose weight without going hungry.
1. Always eat breakfast. And by breakfast, I mean eggs. A randomized study last year at Louisiana State University showed that women who ate a breakfast of two eggs a day for five or more days a week for eight weeks lost 65% more weight than the women who had a bagel breakfast with juice, equaling the same amount of calories. They also had an 83% greater reduction in waist circumference. That is just amazing. Don’t worry about cholesterol, either; their levels were tested and were not adversely affected.
Cut way back on starches. Nothing white. No white rice, potatoes, sugar, bread. Anything refined is not necessary to a healthy eating plan. Beans are a ‘good’ starch option, as are any whole grains.
Never skip a meal. In fact, you should be consuming 5-6 mini-meals a day. If you eat a healthy, balanced small meal every 3-4 hours, you will never go hungry. Hunger leads to binge eating. Since you are eating so frequently, your metabolism will be running effectively all the time.
Avoid fast food restaurants for the rest of your natural life. I’m not exaggerating. It is very difficult to walk into one of those places and get what you need. If for some reason there is no way around it, make sure you stick to your dietary guns and order the healthiest food you can. Don’t be afraid to remove the buns and half of the burger and get happy in the lettuce, tomato and onion.
Drink a lot of water. Cut out all carbonated, sweetened beverages.
Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Schedule a weekend cutting session to create lots of handy, healthy snacks such as carrot slices, cucumber spears, broccoli heads, etc. Store in a bowl of water in the refrigerator, or investigate the containers that keep fresh produce fresh for longer periods of time.
If this is too overwhelming, introduce changes gradually. You could start out by keeping a water bottle with you at all times, refilling as often as necessary. Then the following week you can start with the min-meals, etc.
Cut out the salt. If you use table salt, stop. Find a salt alternative, such as Mrs. Dash.
Study balanced diets. If what you learn isn’t coming together for you, consult a dietician.
Don’t be afraid to eat something. There is no bad food. Just remain moderate. One Hershey Kiss can ease your chocolate cravings. When you do indulge, savor it. Nibble, taste, enjoy.
Don’t be a slave to the numbers on the scale. Remember, you’re shooting for healthy. Weight loss will follow. Just follow through with all your changes, and over time they will become your lifestyle.
