5 Reasons Why You’re Gaining Weight

Have you recently started skipping your exercises, and begun to indulge more in high-calorie foods and drinks? If so, then you probably wouldn’t be surprised if you stepped onto the scale and the number was higher than usual. However, what if you haven’t made any dietary changes whatsoever and you’ve begun to gain weight? This could be the result of many different issues.

We are going to share with you, 5 of the most common causes for nondietary related weight gain. If you identify with any of these issues, it is important that you take action against them, in order to remain at a healthy weight.

You’re Gaining Weight Because…

Here are a few of the most common reasons for weight today.

1. Missing out on sleep

There are two factors that could be at work here.

First, staying up until the late hours of the night often leads to that irresistible urge to snack. If you aren’t guilty of this, then it may be the second factor.

Second, when we’re sleep deprived changes in our hormone levels increase appetite and create the feeling of insatiable hunger that lasts through the following day.

2. Antidepressants

Unfortunately, one of the side effects associated with many antidepressants is an increased weight gain. If you think this is may be the cause behind your weight gain, be sure to speak with your doctor about a possible medication change.

3. Age

It is a popular misconception that menopause causes weight gain. What’s actually occurring is, your metabolism has slowed due to your age, causing you to burn fewer calories. It is important that you keep up with your exercising routine,  as it becomes more important during this stage of your life.

4. Quitting smoking

Although this is an extremely beneficial decision to make for your overall health, it can lead to weight gain. On average, those who quit smoking gain about 10 pounds. After a few weeks of not smoking, the feeling of constant hunger should subside and result in a return to your normal weight.

5. Steroids

Anti-inflammatory steroids, such as prednisone, have been known to cause weight gain. This can be attributed to the fluid retention and increased appetite that result from this type of medication. While taking steroids your body may also begin to retain fat in different areas, such as the face, belly, or back of the neck.
