    • Prepare in Advance: Take the extra time to plan ahead by coming up with a meal plan for the week, and make an accompanying shopping list. This will significantly help you avoid impulse buys of unhealthy items that can deter your healthy eating efforts.
    • Don’t Shop on an Empty Stomach: No matter how much willpower you have, being inside a grocery store with just about every food choice available when you’re starving can make even the most devout dieter cave. Try to shop soon after a meal or, if that’s not possible, bring a healthy snack with you to keep hunger at bay (and keep unhealthy items out of your cart).
    • The Less Ingredients, the Better: A good rule of thumb when grocery shopping is not to buy any foods with more than five ingredients. Avoid foods that contain too many artificial ingredients, especially those you can’t even pronounce.
    • Shop the Perimeter: You’ll want to fill your cart mostly with foods that are situated along the perimeter of the grocery store. This is where the healthiest options, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, meats, and dairy are located. Limit your purchases of products from the center aisles, as these are where many unhealthy items are shelved.
    • Opt for Natural Foods: Buy foods that have had little to no processing and that don’t contain many additives. Look for labels such as 100% whole grain, 100% fruit juice, no added sugar, and no or low sodium.
    • Get Lean Meats: Skinless poultry and lean cuts of meat – like sirloin, round, and tenderloin – are the best choices for both weight loss and overall health.
    • Budget for Produce: Plan to spend a good portion of your grocery budget on produce. Select a variety of fruits and vegetables in an array of colors to get a diverse amount of important nutrients into your diet.
