There are certain characteristics of our diets that must change with age. It is important that you reevaluate the way you take care of yourself, as you get older. This is so vital to your health because of the fact that our bodies change and require different things.
1. Daily Weighing
This is a good tactic when you’re younger, as stepping on a scale every day is a great reminder to eat healthy. As we enter into our 40s and older, hormonal fluctuations cause fluid shifts. This can alter weight on a daily basis. Instead of weighing in once every day, try weighing yourself once per week, at a certain time on a certain day. For instance, every Friday at 10:00 A.M. This will provide you with a more accurate reading.
2. Burn Off Extra Calories With Extra Cardio
As we get older, it becomes more and more difficult to burn off added calories. A donut could cost you an hour long walk, or a 30 minute aerobics class. As you metabolism slows down, your calorie intake should do the same. Give yourself small treats throughout the week to avoid weight gain.
3. Skipping Meals to Lose Weight Fast
Never was this a good plan, but that didn’t stop you from doing it a time or two. As you get a little older, this is an even worse idea. Skipping a meal will cause you to overeat more than if you were to indulge in small snacks throughout the day. Also, after age 40, you are much more likely to crave sweets and sugars if you have not eaten properly throughout the day.
4. Shopping Only The Perimeter of the Store
This is a good rule of thumb when you are younger, due to the fact that this is where the majority of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meats can be found. However, as you begin to enter older age, it becomes important to add fiber to your diet. Oats, quinoa and couscous are great additions to your meals, and they will cause you to feel fuller, faster.
5. Fast Food Will Do
Although in the past, running through the drive-thru was an easy option when you were in a rush, it isn’t anymore. Fast food will cause you to gain excess weight in your midsection and belly. Also, eating these types of foods can cause heart problems, high blood pressure, strokes, and bone loss. A granola bar or other portable food may be a better option.
6. Drink a Glass of Wine Once or Twice Per Day
Although this is often believed to be a great way of life, it can be damaging to your health after 40. Those additional 100-200 calories per day can lead to weight gain over time. Also, as we get a little older, our bodies stop metabolizing alcohol easily, this makes its effects more toxic. A great alternative is seltzer water with a splash of 100% juice.
