Tracking Weight Loss Without a Scale

You Don’t Need a Scale to Track Weight Loss

Setting weight loss goals, and striving to achieve them is a wonderful change to make in your life. However, has the journey become more of a battle with your scale, than a healthy lifestyle change? Sometimes our scales are not the most reliable source for measuring weight loss progress. If you’re losing fat and gaining muscle, your weight may not be going down substantially. This can be very disheartening to someone who is hoping to see the numbers on the scale decreasing.

Living a healthy lifestyle will change your body, but sometimes that change can’t be measured by the number on a scale. Today we are going to share with you, a few of our favorite methods for tracking weight loss, without the use of a scale.

Am I Losing Weight?

The below listed methods work to give you tangible evidence of losing weight and getting fit. We believe that using these types of methods is important for staying inspired and excited along your weight loss journey.

1. Photo Documenting

This has become a very popular means of tracking changes in the body. This method is very, and can be accomplished by anyone with a phone or camera. Photo documenting simply means, taking pictures of your body along your weight loss journey. Some people take one photo at the beginning, and one at the end. We find that taking photos on a more frequent basis (weekly or monthly) often encourages people to further pursue their weight loss goals.

2. Measurements

Taking measurements is one of the best alternatives to stepping on a scale. Often time when we are focusing on eating right and exercising, our bodies begin to build muscle. As we lose weight, and gain muscle, the scale can pretty much stay the same. This is very discouraging. For this reason , measurements are preferred. Unsure how to take measurements? Here’s a guide.

  • Bust: Place the measuring tape across your nipples and measure around the largest part of your chest. Be sure to keep the tape parallel to the floor.
  • Chest: Place the measuring tape just under your breasts/pecs and measure around the torso while keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
  • Waist: Place the measuring tape about a 1/2 inch above your bellybutton (at the narrowest part of your waist) to measure around your torso. When measuring your waist, exhale and measure before inhaling again.
  • Hips: Place the measuring tape across the widest part of your hips/buttocks and measure all the way around while keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

3. Go Through Your Closet

This method is exactly how it sounds. Go through your closet and try on clothes that used to fit. Do they fit now? Some things will look better on you than they ever have, some will be too big, some may not fit areas that have become more toned. Whatever the verdict may be, knowing that they don’t fit the same as they used to is encouragement to keep going.
