• Eat Yourself Zen – 5 Foods That Relieve Stress

  • Stress causes weight gain and weight gain causes more stress, it’s a viscous cycle. According to Harvard Medical School stress triggers the fight or flight response in our bodies which then tells our bodies to hang on to fat because it thinks we’ll need it to face the emergency ahead. This all worked out really well when we were primal, but in our sedentary lifestyles there is not a lot of hunting or fighting off danger going on in most of our lives. So how do we combat this stress/weight gain cycle? With the right clean foods of course.

    1. Spinach: Sometimes the weight of our daily responsibilities sits heavily on our shoulders. During these times we become more susceptible to heightened stress levels. One way we can maintain a healthy mental state is making sure that we have enough magnesium in our bodies. Without the proper magnesium levels we are prone to headaches and fatigue which increases stress. 1 cup of spinach per day will keep your body at a healthy balance.
    2. Fatty Fish: 3 ounces of fatty fish at least twice per week will provide your body with a happy amount of omega 3s. Not only does omega 3 prevent surges in stress hormones, but it also protects your body against long term mood disorders such as depression. Omega 3 can be found in fish such as tuna and salmon.
    3. Black Tea: Based on the findings gathered during a recent study, scientists now believe black tea helps us to recover from stressful situation more quickly. A group of people drank four cups of tea every day for six weeks and were found to have lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, in their bodies after handling stressful situations.
    4. Raw Veggies: While these other food options relieved stress internally by providing your body with substances that it needed to balance emotions. Raw veggies work in a different way. The physical act of clenching your jaw to break through crisp vegetables relieves built up stress keeps the tension at bay.
    5. Coconut: Another food that relieves stress without providing your body with any nutrients to aide in the relief, is the coconut. A study conducted at Columbia University revealed that the mere scent of coconut slows your heart rate and stops the fight or flight response your body tends to jump into when introduced to a stressful situation. The smell also helped to recover normal blood pressure levels quickly, after handling challenging circumstances.

Dealing with stress is a constant battle in today’s society. Health, family, careers, school, there is an endless list of things calling for our attention and, unintentionally, sending us into an emotional upheaval. However, there are ways to avoid becoming easily consumed with emotions and that is, with the right foods. We don’t mean emotional binge eating! We mean natural and healthy foods that when consumed, or in some cases smelled, on a regular basis can keep your mental state in check while simultaneously¬† helping you to meet your weight loss goals.¬†
